Previously, we mentioned how HMRC introduced COVID-19 relief and the steps you needed to take to claim it.

However, this scheme by HMRC is the latest target of cyber criminals as thy have started sending out emails to people claiming to be from HMRC soliciting their bank details.
The subject line reads as “Your COVID-19 Relief Package” and the sender is written as HM Revenue & Customs.
But if you click sender details it will show sender email address which reads as which is clearly very suspicious and unlikely to be from HMRC.

The text in the email reads as:

“Dear Customer,

We wrote to you last week to help you prepare to make a claim through the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme. We are now writing to tell you how to access the Covid-19 relief.

Information you will need before you make a claim

You should retain all records and calculations in respect of your claims.

We continue to wish you all the best at this challenging time.

Yours sincerely

Jim Harra

First Permanent Secretary and Chief Executive HMRC”

It is a shame that cyber criminals made HMRC’s COVID-19 relief the target of their latest scam playing on the vulnerabilities of people seeking to benefit from COVID-19 relief.

People are advised to beware of such scams claiming their source as HMRC and not provide their bank details to anyone soliciting such personal details for the sake of their own safety.

Also, please keep in mind that that your respective accountant will access their or your secure gateway portal with HMRC and will be able to process this claim for you.

Please share this information with people in your circle so that no one falls victim to this cybercrime.
