UK Business Confidence Reaches Highest Level Since March: What SMEs Need to Know

Business confidence in the UK just hit its best level since March. The Lloyds Business Barometer put the figure at 53% for August 2026, up 4 points from July and well ahead of the 12-month average of 47%.

What’s behind it? Mostly, firms are feeling better about customer demand and where trading is headed. For SMEs, that’s good news on paper. But good news still needs a plan behind it.

The numbers

  • 53% – overall business confidence, August 2026
  • Up 4 points month on month
  • 53% – confidence among SMEs under £5 million turnover
  • 66% – expect higher output over the next year
  • 51% – expect to raise prices (lowest since 2022)

Smaller firms are leading this

Their confidence rose by 5 points to 53% among SMEs below £ 5 m, compared to the rest of the market. That’s a significant indicator. It suggests more owners are willing to think past “getting by” and start looking at investment and expansion again.

Sector by sector, the story’s similar. Manufacturing added 8 points, bringing the total to 55%. Services hit 56%, the best reading since July 2025. Retail moved up five points to 48%.

So what should SMEs actually do with this?

When confidence rises, plans that have been on hold for a while tend to come back out: new hires, new kit, expansion into a second site, that sort of thing. There’s nothing wrong with that. The danger does not lie in ambition, but in also having the numbers to support it. Unchecked, unplanned growth by firms can lead to a situation where the costs of growth outweigh the benefits in the short term, unless cash flow is analysed.

Confidence is useful. It’s not a substitute for a forecast

Where things can go wrong

None of this is a reason to hold back, but it is a reason to be deliberate. Cash flow that’s loosely tracked, forecasts built on hope rather than numbers, tax obligations left until the deadline is close- these are the things that quietly undo a good trading period. Worth checking now, before commitments pile up.

A few things worth doing this month

  • Go back over your cash-flow forecast and see what funding you’ll need
  • Test whether the growth plan holds up once the numbers are in front of you
  • Talk to an advisor before signing off on anything big

Where Lanop fits in

Confidence returning to the market is a good thing for the UK economy generally. But turning that into something durable takes more than optimism; it requires financial discipline. That’s the part we work on with SME clients: accounting, tax, and advisory support that gives owners a clear read on where they stand and what’s coming.

The businesses that do best from here won’t just be the most confident ones. They’ll be the ones who paired that confidence with a proper look at the numbers.
