HSBC Plans UK Wealth Management Job Cuts as AI Reshapes Financial Advice

HSBC Plans UK Wealth Management Job Cuts as AI Reshapes Financial Advice

HSBC is planning major changes across its UK wealth management business. The bank may cut many financial advisers, management, and specialist roles. Reports published on 7 October 2026 revealed the planned restructuring. Financial adviser roles could fall by as much as 70%.

Management and specialist positions could also fall by around 50%. A consultation process has already started for staff affected by changes. Some affected employees could leave HSBC by the end of October. The bank has not confirmed the total number of jobs affected.

This means the percentages need to be understood with some care. The bank has started a consultation process. Staff affected by the changes could leave HSBC by the end of October 2026.

Why Is HSBC Changing Its Wealth Business?

HSBC is moving towards more digital products and customer service journeys. Artificial intelligence is becoming part of that wider technology shift. The change also fits HSBC’s wider plan to simplify operations. HSBC first targeted $1.5 billion in savings through this programme.

That target was later increased to $2 billion in August 2026. The bank expects the required actions to finish this year. However, HSBC’s plans are not simply about reducing staff numbers.

The bank is also investing in new technology and specialist skills. This shows how banking jobs are changing rather than simply disappearing.

AI Use Across Banking Is Growing Fast

The timing of HSBC’s announcement is important for financial services. The Evident AI Index 2026 was published on 6 October. It ranked HSBC 11th among 50 major banks for AI maturity. HSBC had ranked 8th in the previous year’s AI Index.

The wider report showed banks are increasing their use of AI. Banks are also building skills needed to manage these new systems. This makes HSBC’s UK restructuring part of a wider industry change.

Does AI Mean Human Financial Advice Is Ending?

The current evidence does not suggest human expertise will simply disappear. HSBC’s own research published earlier in 2026 found that many investors were already using AI tools. However, professional advisers and financial institutions still played an important role when people made investment decisions.

However, professional advisers still influence many important investment decisions. This matters because complex choices often need judgement and proper context. AI can process information quickly and support many routine financial tasks.

It cannot remove the need for responsibility in important business decisions. The future is therefore likely to involve technology and people together.

What Does This Mean for UK Businesses?

UK business owners should pay attention to this wider financial shift. More financial services will become digital over the coming years. Routine work may become quicker through automation and better software.

However, businesses still need clear advice for complicated financial decisions. Tax planning, business structure, reporting, and cash flow need careful judgement. Ignoring this change could leave businesses using unsuitable support or systems. Owners should review how their current financial advisers use technology.

They should also check whether human support remains easily available. The key question is not whether an adviser uses AI. Businesses should ask how technology supports professional judgement and accountability.
